A Director of Photography ( DOP) is considered as the leader of a video production. A Director of Photography must have camera skills, lighting knowledge and ability to work with camera men to create perfect scene of the film. If you want to become Director of Photography you have to work as an Assistant Photographer first to learn the role more clearly. While it is possible to learn some of these skills in school, however, experience is usually gained on site.

Secondary Roles of the Director of Photography

The DOP will also work with all other department leaders during the production. The DOP is the leader of the visual team recording the production who call for makeup or costume department if necessary to get the most appropriate look for the video. The DOP must pay close attention to the details, know how to fix any visual problems that arise. Good communication skills are essential for a Director of Photography, as well as creative mind that will make production look impressive.
